NEW PHILLY SOUND

The Story

Rooted in Philadelphia’s rich jazz tradition and looking toward its future, The New Philly Sound is an evolving collective of emerging university musicians with deep Philly connections—whether born and raised in the region, studying at a Philadelphia university, or coming from a Philadelphia jazz family.

Each school year, returning members of the previous ensemble select the next generation of players, creating a continuum that evolves as musicians graduate and new voices join. There is no designated bandleader; instead, The New Philly Sound is a true collective, shaped by the ideas, talents, and experiences of its members.

The Heart of Jazz provides the musicians with professional development, mentorship, performance opportunities, and connections designed to help launch their careers as working jazz artists. In turn, the musicians serve as ambassadors for The Heart of Jazz and for the vibrant legacy of Philadelphia jazz.

A major milestone arrives this fall with the release of The Heart of Jazz Presents The New Philly Sound on September 25, 2026. The album features 10 selections, including five original compositions written by four members of the ensemble.

The New Philly Sound embodies The Heart of Jazz’s overriding mission: to help talented young musicians build sustainable jazz careers while honoring—and carrying forward—the extraordinary tradition of jazz in Philadelphia.
