THE MILES DAVIS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION WITH THE MILES ELECTRIC BAND / FRIDAY, MAY 15 / Cape May Convention Hall / 8:30-10:00 PM
The Story
To celebrate the centennial of one Miles Dewey Davis (born on May 26, 1926 in Alton, Illinois), Emmy and Grammy Award-winning producer/drummer and radio host Vince Wilburn Jr. (who was also a nephew of the late jazz icon and currently oversees Miles Davis Properties, LLC, along with Miles’ son Erin and daughter Cheryl) has assembled an all-star band focusing on the electric side of Miles’ expansive repertoire. Wilburn, who worked with his uncle Miles intermittently from 1980 to 1986, brings his Miles Electric Band to Cape May for their debut at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Vince Wilburn Jr. – Drums, Artistic Director, Darryl Jones - Bass, Jason Kibler aka DJ Logic, Jean Paul Bourelly - Guitar, Greg Spero - Keys, Robert Irving III– Keys, Musical Director, Munyungo Jackson - Percussion, Rasaki Aladokun - Percussion, Antoine Roney - Saxophone, Keyon Harrold - Trumpet.
The Sound
Drawing on material from Miles Davis’ groundbreaking Bitches Brew from 1970, along with a string of albums from the 1980s (1981’s Man With the Horn, 1982’s We Want Miles, 1983’s Star People, 1984’s Decoy, 1985’s You’re Under Arrest and 1986’s Tutu), the Miles Electric Band will rock the Cape May Convention Hall in a manner that will do “The Prince of Darkness” proud. Expect lots of adventurous stretching in the solo department from Messrs. Roney and Harrold, along with some compelling sounds from musical director Irving’s synths and Logic’s turntables layered over some pulsating, funk-driven grooves, courtesy of Wilburn (aka “Nef”), bassist Jones, and percussionist Cinelu.
