Brian Betz & Denis DiBlasio 4Tet, Saturday and Sunday, Carney's Other Room
Exit Zero Jazz Festival favorites Brian Betz and Denis DiBlasio return for another engagement showcasing their sheer chops and urge to swing. Guitarist-educator Betz, who resides in the Philadelphia Metro Area, has performed extensively throughout the United States and has released six recordings on the Dreambox Media Label, including 2001’s Running, 2003’s Without A Doubt and 2005’s Dichotomy. Acclaimed baritone sax burner, flutist, prodigious scat singer and Philly native DiBlasio has released nine recordings as a leader, debuting with 1993’s Catch Me and including 2000’s Rhino and 2007’s Where the Jade Buddha Lives. Together the two kindred spirits have two recordings, 2007’s live 2-CD set Denis DiBlasio/Brian Betz Project and their 2010 followup, Flute/Guitar. The former musical director for the Maynard Ferguson Big Band of the ‘80s (he put in five years of road work with that swinging juggernaut), DiBlasio is currently Executive Director of The Maynard Ferguson Institute of Jazz and head of Jazz and Composition programs at Rowan University in Glasboro, New Jersey. As an international clinician, DiBlasio has traveled to Thailand, Italy, Luxemburg, Prague, Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, Switzerland, Denmark and Japan.
During the course of this straight ahead quartet’s set you might hear a blazing take on “Secret Love” followed by a tender interpretation of Duke Ellington’s “Satin Doll” then a surging rendition of Joe Henderson’s “Inner Urge” or Betz’s swinging original “Razor Sharp.” And it’s always full steam ahead when these two virtuosos take the stage.
